Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary

Economic Impact

The Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary's strategic location near I-95—a major north-south corridor traveled by some 40,000 motorists a day—makes it an inviting destination for vacationers looking for family-friendly entertainment. More specifically, this nature-based facility, unlike any other in the Lowcountry, will target the hot ecotourism market, the fastest-growing segment of the nation's $1.3-trillion travel industry.

Drawing an estimated 150,000 visitors to the area each year, the Sanctuary will serve as a major economic force for Colleton County and the City of Walterboro, creating a demand for expanded tourism amenities such as high-quality hotels, restaurants and shops. Displays in the Discovery Center also will promote other South Carolina nature-based attractions, including Caw Caw Interpretive Center, Charleston Gardens, Francis Marion Forest and Congaree National Park, extending the economic impact across the state.
