The starting point of a journey through an environment foreign to most Americans, the $4-million Discovery Center will introduce visitors to the Great Swamp experience. Their first view of this fascinating landscape will come in the main exhibit hall with its large glass windows looking out over the swamp. Among the center’s other integral components are a multi-purpose classroom and theater that will provide space for meetings and lectures with the flexibility for presentations featuring a wide range of digital media. A retail center will offer visitors the opportunity to purchase books, bird lists, photographs and other items to further enrich their walk through the swamp. In addition, the shop will feature a selection of wares created by local artists and craftsmen and information about other cultural and historic centers in the City of Walterboro and Colleton County.
