  • Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire;
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris;
  • Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases;
  • Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire;
  • Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects;
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action;
  • Keeps fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition;
  • Participates in training activities and instruction sessions;
  • Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items;
  • Performs various public information or education tasks;
  • Enters inspection, training and (on occasion) fire and other emergency service calls into the records management systems;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities











Knowledge of:

  • The geography of the City of Walterboro and surrounding areas, (or the ability to quickly learn this information), including the streets system, hydrant locations, the layout and location of public utilities and potentially hazardous materials or substances;
  • Specialized fire fighting vehicles and equipment;
  • Current strategies for all types of fire such as commercial, residential, flammable and combustible liquids, vehicle, etc.;
  • Basic mathematical and science skills;
  • Uniform fire code for inspection purposes;
  • Emergency response records systems, communications equipment and use, fire computer applications and incident reporting procedures;
  • Computers and related software.

Ability to:

  • Make determinations as to the best course of action for fighting fires or responding to other related emergency situations;
  • Work under extremely stressful situations, day and night, which result from a fire and other emergencies, including the responsibility for remaining calm and carrying out all duties with the recognition of the threat to life and property;
  • Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to the following of orders;
  • Work in a team environment under extremely stressful situations;
  • Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
    · Learn and correctly apply routine division and department policies and procedures;
  • Read, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions; and to understand and apply available guidelines to varied operational requirements;
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and other employees.

Supervision Received:
The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Fire Captain.

Minimum Qualifications



  • High school diploma or GED equivalency; and 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application;
  • Fire Fighter I & Fire Fighter II Certification; or 
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work; or
  • The abilities to attend the South Carolina Fire Academy.
  • Must be willing to reside within Colleton County  
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen and back ground check

 Salary Range: $26,146.00 - $33,369.00

Job Duties:

  • Patrols the City of Walterboro to protect life and property

  • Responds to calls for service

  • Enforcesall federal, state and local laws as well as city ordinances

  • Provides testimony and prepares documents relating to the adjudication of cases in court

  • Apprehends and arrest criminal suspects and law violators

  • Maintains order and public safety

  • Performs duties related to law enforcement work as required

  • Work with supervision to produce the best results possible


  • Be a citizen of the United States and a High School graduate

  • 21 years old or older and possess a S.C. drivers license

  • Must have sucessfully completed or have the ability to complete courses of study at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy

  • Must possess skill in using firearms and in the operation of a motor vehicle

  • Must possess skill in dealing firmly, tactfully and courteously with the public

  • Must have the ability to prepair clear and concise reports

  • Must live or be willing to relocate to Colleton County

  • Must be able to pass a polygraph, psychological test, credit check, thorough background investigation, and pre-employment drug screen


  • Salary $31,676. Negotable depending on experience and education

Parks Department

Irrigation Technician


To install, repair and maintain the City’s irrigation systems in roadway medians, parks and other areas covered by the City of Walterboro’s parks maintenance responsibilities.

Job Duties:

  • Installs, adjusts, repairs and replaces irrigation systems

  • Plans and schedules work to provide for preventive maintenance and efficient performance to quickly locate and repair broken pipes, irrigation heads, etc. to reduce water loss and assure proper operation of systems.

  • Adjusts, resets, repairs, or replaces irrigation controllers and/or valves.

  • Programs, monitors, repairs and adjusts computer controlled irrigation systems.

  • Maintains an inventory of spare parts, irrigation heads, tools and supplies for repairs

  • Meets with city personnel to obtain information on meters, utility lines, and other needed technical data to locate, repair and install irrigation systems.

  • Compiles and prepares necessary maps, reports and records.

  • Tests irrigation systems for proper functioning of valves and timers.

  • Ability to read diagrams and blueprints to layout and locate irrigation valves, timers and wiring.

  • Perform other job-related duties assigned by the Parks Director


  • Associates Degree in Horticulture, Turf Grass Management and/or a High School Diploma and two years experience performing irrigation maintenance.

  • Valid South Carolina Drivers License
